Ph.D. Fellowships in Elementary Particle Physics

The International Max Planck Research School "Elementary Particle Physics - Theoretical, Experimental and Cosmological Frontiers" (IMPRS EPP) is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute of Physics (Werner Heisenberg Institute) and the particle and astroparticle physics groups of the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and the Technical University Munich. Since April 2005 the School has been offering excellent research opportunities to highly qualified doctoral students. Research fields covered by the School from both an experimental and a theoretical perspective include high energy particle physics, astroparticle physics, and cosmology. The physics of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics, symmetries and mechanisms for symmetry breaking, neutrino physics and neutrino astrophysics, supersymmetry, string theory, physics and technology of particle detectors and light sensors, dark matter, gamma-ray astrophysics, cosmic rays, and weak interaction physics are just a f
ew examples of the range of topics under investigation. The students own research is supplemented by an accompanying lecture program. Regular seminars, workshops, and other joint events serve to broaden the intellectual horizon, stimulate interaction between IMPRS members, and provide valuable background knowledge on topics beyond the students own research project.

Note that the IMPRS EPP is a school for PhD students only. Work on a Master/Diploma Thesis is not supported. Moreover, a Master/Diploma Thesis documenting at least about 6 months of research is required to be accepted.

Postdoctoral and Research Professor positions at ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research

A research institute derived from the ICTP Italy has been constituted by collaboration of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) with the São Paulo State University (UNESP) and the São Paulo Research Funding Agency (FAPESP). The ICTP-SAIFR is located at the campus of the Instituto de Física Teórica (IFT-UNESP) in the city of São Paulo and activities include seminars, minicourses, schools and workshops. The center has funding for short-term and long-term visitors as well as for postdoctoral and permanent researchers. See the official link here.

PhD Student (f/m) in Quasiparticle Dynamics in Graphene

In the framework of the priority program “Graphene” of the German Research Foundation the Otto Hahn Group “Ultrafast Electron Dynamics” at the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) in Hamburg

Description

The Research Group works in close collaboration with the Condensed Matter Dynamics Department of Prof. Andrea Cavalleri at the MPSD and the Nanoscale Science Department of Prof. Klaus Kern at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (MPI-FKF) in Stuttgart. The position will be based in Hamburg but explicitly contains research trips to the MPI-FKF and various Synchrotron radiation facilities worldwide. The work aims at a better understanding of the limits of the charge carrier mobility in epitaxial graphene, a truly two-dimensional carbon layer supported by a substrate. Special emphasis is put on the influence of screening, disorder, and the interaction of the massless graphene charge carriers with other quasiparticles. The experimental techniques employed include both time-resolved and static angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) as well as scanning tunneling spectroscopy/microscopy (STM/STS), providing access to the electronic structure both in momentum space and real space as well as quasiparticle dynamics in the time domain.

The successful candidate is a highly motivated and enthusiastic experimentalist with a strong background in condensed matter physics. Experience with femtosecond laser systems, ultrahigh vacuum, ARPES, or STM/STS is beneficial. The candidate should possess excellent English skills and enjoy working in an international team.
