Process Research Engineer, DTU, Denmark

The Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark has an opening for a process research engineer to develop state-of-the-art nano and micro devices in the research group of quantum physics and information technology (QPIT).

QPIT is performing basic and applied research in quantum optics, spintronics, and quantum information processing. The mission of the group is to investigate new quantum technologies that can be used to develop ultraprecise quantum sensors and for the development of super-fast quantum computers of the future. The active research group comprises a mixture of university professors, research assistants, and PhD students. The group is internationally recognized for its contributions in quantum information processing.

We seek a highly motivated process engineer to develop new high-quality nano- and micro-structured devices of Silicon, Silica and, in particular, Diamond using different etching and deposition techniques. The candidate will also participate in setting up a new system for diamond growth using PECVD.

The position is part of a new collaborative project on quantum magnetometry that involves partners at DTU Electro, Ulm University, Leipzig University, Hvidovre Hospital, and Unisensor A/S. It is funded by the Danish Strategic Research Council by 14MKr. The aim of the project is to exploit the unique quantum properties of color centers in diamond crystals to develop new innovative magnetic field sensors (magnetometers) with unprecedented sensitivity and/or extraordinary high spatial resolution.

Qualifications
We are seeking a person with the following skills:
  • Preferably a PhD degree within optics/photonics, physics, or engineering, or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level
  • Extensive experience with different etching and deposition techniques, in particular RIE, PECVD, LPCVD, and sputtering
  • Experience with fabrication and characterization of micro- and nano-structures
  • Familiarity with working in a clean room
  • Fluency in English – written and spoken
We offer
The successful candidate will join a young, dynamic and international research group with a strong vision. The research program includes quantum photonics, micro-photonics, quantum plasmonics, opto-mechanics, solid state optics, and spintronics. More information about the group can be found on the homepage: QPIT.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary will be agreed with the relevant union. The position is to be filled as soon as possible. The employment period it three years with the possibility of extension.

Further information
For more information please contact Jørn Bindslev Hansen, jbh@fysik.dtu.dk or Ulrik Andersen, Ulrik.andersen@fysik.dtu.dk.

Application
Please submit your online application no later than February 23, 2014. Please open the link "apply online" (“ansøg online”), fill in the application form and attach your application, CV, and diplomas.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion, or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.

PhD position in Bioinformatics Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student within a research project in the field of gene regulatory network inference funded by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research, Erlangen.

Applicants should have successfully completed their Master’s/ Diploma degree in bioinformatics, bioengineering, applied mathematics, or a related discipline. Good programming skills, strong interest in the biological interpretation of results, and good working knowledge of English are a requirement. Competence in genomics data analysis and/or statistical modeling would be a plus.

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), with more than 35,000 students and over 550 professors, is the second largest university in Bavaria and has a research-intensive focus. Research at the Institute of Human Genetics aims at elucidating the molecular basis of both monogenic and complex diseases and its findings are translated into everyday patient care. The position is vacant immediately and the payment will be on the basis of 50%/65% TV-L E13. FAU is an equal opportunities employer.

Complete applications (including cover letter, CV, copies of degree certificates, and names of at least two references) should be submitted via mail or email to Dr. Fulvia Ferrazzi, Institute of Human Genetics, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Schwabachanlage 10, 91054 Erlangen, Germany, email: fulvia.ferrazzi@uk-erlangen.de

Ph.D. Fellowships in Elementary Particle Physics

The International Max Planck Research School "Elementary Particle Physics - Theoretical, Experimental and Cosmological Frontiers" (IMPRS EPP) is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute of Physics (Werner Heisenberg Institute) and the particle and astroparticle physics groups of the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and the Technical University Munich. Since April 2005 the School has been offering excellent research opportunities to highly qualified doctoral students. Research fields covered by the School from both an experimental and a theoretical perspective include high energy particle physics, astroparticle physics, and cosmology. The physics of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics, symmetries and mechanisms for symmetry breaking, neutrino physics and neutrino astrophysics, supersymmetry, string theory, physics and technology of particle detectors and light sensors, dark matter, gamma-ray astrophysics, cosmic rays, and weak interaction physics are just a f
ew examples of the range of topics under investigation. The students own research is supplemented by an accompanying lecture program. Regular seminars, workshops, and other joint events serve to broaden the intellectual horizon, stimulate interaction between IMPRS members, and provide valuable background knowledge on topics beyond the students own research project.

Note that the IMPRS EPP is a school for PhD students only. Work on a Master/Diploma Thesis is not supported. Moreover, a Master/Diploma Thesis documenting at least about 6 months of research is required to be accepted.

Please submit your application through the APPLICATION FORM on the WWW page "http://www.imprs-epp.de/admission.html". Otherwise, your application cannot be considered. On the web page  "http://www.imprs-epp.de.", you will find more detailed information on the IMPRS EPP, the requirements, etc.

Topics:
Experimental and Theoretical Particle Physiscs and Astroparticle Physics

Starting date: 1. April 2014
