Ph.D. Fellowships in Elementary Particle Physics

The International Max Planck Research School "Elementary Particle Physics - Theoretical, Experimental and Cosmological Frontiers" (IMPRS EPP) is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute of Physics (Werner Heisenberg Institute) and the particle and astroparticle physics groups of the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and the Technical University Munich. Since April 2005 the School has been offering excellent research opportunities to highly qualified doctoral students. Research fields covered by the School from both an experimental and a theoretical perspective include high energy particle physics, astroparticle physics, and cosmology. The physics of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics, symmetries and mechanisms for symmetry breaking, neutrino physics and neutrino astrophysics, supersymmetry, string theory, physics and technology of particle detectors and light sensors, dark matter, gamma-ray astrophysics, cosmic rays, and weak interaction physics are just a f
ew examples of the range of topics under investigation. The students own research is supplemented by an accompanying lecture program. Regular seminars, workshops, and other joint events serve to broaden the intellectual horizon, stimulate interaction between IMPRS members, and provide valuable background knowledge on topics beyond the students own research project.

Note that the IMPRS EPP is a school for PhD students only. Work on a Master/Diploma Thesis is not supported. Moreover, a Master/Diploma Thesis documenting at least about 6 months of research is required to be accepted.

Post-Doc and PhD positions in TEM

The Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Ulm invites applications for

2 Post-Doctoral (100 %) and 2 PhD student positions (50 %)

starting at the earliest possible date. The PhD positions will be for 3 years and the PostDoc positions for initially 2 years. Salary is according to German standards E13 TV-L.

The positions are available in the area of theoretical and experimental transmission electron microscopy. Possible topics include: a) 3D Strain mapping in semiconductor devices with sub-nanometer spatial resolution, b) Quantitative inline holography, c) Quantitative 3D electron diffraction and crystallography, d) Development of numerical tools to solve the dynamic inversion problem in electron diffraction from LARBED data, and e) Development of new electron optical devices.

The successful applicant will join the group of Prof. Christoph Koch (a recently established Carl Zeiss Professorship) at Ulm University. The experimental work will be carried out in a well-equipped TEM laboratory featuring, among others, a unique 200 kV Zeiss EM922 TEM featuring a high-transmissivity corrected Omega-type in-column filter, an imaging aberration-corrected FEI Titan 80-300, and, in the near future, the Cs-Cc-corrected Zeiss SALVE microscope optimized for atomic resolution at accelerating voltages between 20 and 80 kV. A modern specimen preparation lab including also a triple-beam FIB is available as well.

Applicants should have either a masters (for the PhD positions) or a doctorate (for the post-doc positions) degree in physics, mathematics or materials science and should be skilled in at least one computer programming language (preferably C/C++, Matlab, or Python). Knowledge of (electron) optics, diffraction, and (dynamical) electron scattering theory, as well as hands-on (experimental) TEM experience would be an advantage.

PhD Studentships in Theoretical Biophysics (Saarbruecken, Germany)

PhD positions in Theoretical Biophysics / Computational Physics are
offered by the junior research group

Theoretical & Computational Membrane Biology
in Saarbrücken, Germany.

Possible PhD projects include

* the investigation of protein-lipid interactions on the atomic
scale, using the method of molecular dynamics simulations,

* the prediction of the action of drugs and peptides on membranes
and membrane proteins (e.g. of anesthetics),

* the study of pore formation in membranes by external electric
fields
(e.g. electroporation),

* the modeling of membrane fusion, and

* the in silico study of phase transitions in biological membranes
and their role in the function of membrane proteins.


Work of the group for Theoretical & Computational Membrane Biology is
focused on the prediction of structure, function and (nano)dynamics of
membranes and proteins. Our main interest is directed towards the
interplay of proteins (e.g. of ion channels) with the surrounding
lipids and drugs in biological (cell) membranes. Addressed questions
cover: How do peptides and proteins interact with the membrane? Can we
predict fusion, budding, fission properties? How is transport along and
through membranes achieved? Currently, the international group
consists of five PhD students and several Master and Bachelor students.

Applicants should have successfully completed their Masters or Diploma
degree preferably in physics or theoretical (bio)chemistry, be strongly
motivated and team-oriented. Experience in Molecular Modeling or
structural biology is of advantage, however, applicants from other
fields of research are most welcome. The PhD positions are funded
according to the German TVöD scale (2/3 E13) or with a stipend (1,460
Euro/month). The positions are limited to three years.
